MTTC Lower Elementary (PK–3) Education – Professional Knowledge and Skills (117) Practice Test

When students come in with a wide range of skills, tailoring instruction to readiness helps keep the class on track and prevents frustration for anyone. Breaking the class into small groups based on what each student can do allows you to propose assignments that fit their current level—providing more support where needed and more challenge where appropriate. This approach makes classroom management easier because you can circulate with targeted materials, give specific feedback, and move at a pace that works for each group, rather than forcing every learner to fit into one task.

Doing the same task for everyone misses the mark because some students will find it too easy and others too hard, leading to disengagement or overwhelm. Assigning only the highest achievers a challenging task neglects the needs of the rest and won’t help those with more to develop. Relying on peer tutoring alone can be helpful as a supplement, but it isn’t sufficient by itself to ensure all students receive appropriate instruction and support.
